Jan. 20 family law clinic open to residents of Madison, Holmes, Leake and Yazoo counties

January 17, 2023

A free civil legal clinic will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in Canton for residents of Madison, Holmes, Leake and Yazoo counties. The clinic will be at the Madison County Chancery Court at 146 West Center Street in Canton.

The clinic aims to assist self-represented litigants with matters such as uncontested divorces, simple wills, advanced healthcare directives, powers of attorney and name changes. Participants seeking assistance may receive legal advice and have court documents prepared by licensed Mississippi attorneys and law students under the supervision of a licensed attorney.

People interested in the clinic may register online at https://www.mvlp.org/clinics or contact the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project at 601-882-5003 to find out if they are eligible for services and to schedule an appointment. Participants will be screened for income-based eligibility to qualify for free service.

Self-represented litigants often struggle in their efforts to navigate the complexities of state laws and court rules. Their cases are delayed when the documents that they file aren’t adequate or don’t comply with court requirements. Free legal clinics provide an opportunity for participants to get legal advice and receive help with document preparation.

Chancellor Cynthia Brewer said, “A clinic gives participants quicker relief, and the clinic gives the Court the information that it needs to make a decision on the issues.”

Judge Brewer will be available at the clinic to conduct hearings and sign orders in matters which are ready to be addressed immediately.

The clinic is hosted by the Leadership Mississippi Bar Program in partnership with the 11th Chancery Court, the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project and the Mississippi Access to Justice Commission.
